Staffordshire & West Midlands CRC – HMI Probation reveal highest workloads ever seen

This week’s HMI Probation report into the Staffordshire and West Midlands CRC www.justiceinspectorates.gov.uk/hmiprobation says that while there was evidence of strong leadership, the quality of its delivery of supervision was undermined by excessive workloads.

Not exactly a gob-smacking surprise, following the intelligence on workload pressures that reaches us from that part of the CRC estate and elsewhere for that matter. I must say that I rarely have reason to take issue with the conclusions that Dame Glenys reaches, especially given the forensic and highly effective work that her team undertakes, but I have difficulty understanding how that ‘strong leadership’ mantle has seemingly had no impact on the systemic workload problems.

Leaders are expected to come up with ideas; one might suggest that CRC management show some of that strong leadership and pick up on the unarguable recommendation from Dame Glenys to make serious noises with the contracting authority about the need for more resources.
