General Federation of Trade Unions – A valued partner to Napo and our members

Napo’s work with the Trade Union Congress and any number of like-minded organisations with an interest in the Criminal Justice System is well documented, but our relationship with the GFTU provides Napo and its members with many opportunities in the field of Trade Union education, organisation and campaigning.

The GFTU was founded in 1899 and is celebrating its 120th year in style. Its early work saw the GFTU being one of the main providers and campaigners for the creation of the Welfare State. The attached document profiles the impressive work undertaken this year, including five new affiliates and successful campaigning on the issues that the GFTU Executive Committee have focused on. This includes a huge expansion programme at the beautiful Quorn Grange Hotel which provides services to the local community by way of Weddings and functions to the the launch of the GFU’s new and expanded education programme, and sponsorship of important initiatives such as the recent Ken Loach film on the gig economy, and the ‘Shout Out’ programme bringing political and trade education to schools.

In addition, the GFTU are publicising an improved suite of practical services to save money for its affiliates, with suppliers who share our values and who are prepared to make donations to the GFTU Educational Trust which in turn provides GFTU unions with more free education opportunities. Napo has already engaged the GFTU to be its payroll provider and the organisation is now marketing a range of other services such as full accountancy and audit functions to managing education administration, and other administrative functions, and a range of important discounts for members.

The GFTU General Secretary is Doug Nichols who has visited a number of Napo AGM’s over the years. Doug says: ‘I now believe that the Federation is well placed to be the support organisation of choice for trade unions to help keep them cost effective, strong and independent.’

The GFTU is accountable to an Executive Committee of which Napo General Secretary Ian Lawrence is an elected member.
