Members will have seen the email from Ian Lawrence on Thursday 9th December, letting people know the sad news that former Napo AGS, Harry Fletcher, passed away suddenly over Christmas. It was a great shock. Harry was Assistant General Secretary of Napo for nearly 30 years until he left in 2013.
We have received the following from Harry’s family.
With sadness we regret to announce the death of Harry Fletcher on the 8th January 2020.
Harry was a longtime advocate of social justice, victims rights and was a criminal justice expert campaigning across political parties, bringing people together to develop progressive policies to effect lasting change.
Harry was a campaigner for the National Council for One-Parent Families, Assistant General Secretary for the National Association of Probation Officers, working alongside the Labour Party, the Liberal Democrats, the Conservatives and most recently Plaid Cymru. Harry was instrumental in changing the law regarding domestic violence and stalking.
Harry leaves a long term partner Kate and two sons William and George.
Many Napo members will remember Harry well. As Assistant General Secretary with responsibility for media, parliamentary liaison and campaigning, Harry was extremely successful in making sure Napo had a high public profile and spearheaded many, many successful campaigns on behalf of the union. Over the years he was the ‘voice of Napo’ on TV, radio and in the papers.
We are sure you will join with Napo HQ in sending your condolences to Harry’s family. Kath Falcon has kindly offered to receive messages and tributes from colleagues of Harry which we will compile for the family and also publish in Napo Magazine the future.
