WASPI matters

One of our carried AGM Motions in 2017 was to support the WASPI Campaign.  WASPI are a campaign group that fights the injustice done to all women born in the 1950s affected by the changes to the State Pension Law.

The 1995 Conservative Government’s Pension Act included plans to increase women’s SPA (State Pension Age) to 65, the same as mens. WASPI agrees with equalisation, but does not agree with the unfair way the changes were implemented – with little or no personal notice, faster than promised and with no time for affected women to make alternative plans. WASPI started the campaign with just five ordinary women who in 2015 got together and decided to fight this injustice.

The aim of the Campaign is to achieve fair transitional state pension arrangements for the women born in the 1950s who are affected by the changes. Basically, this means a ‘bridging’ pension to provide an income until State Pension Age – not means-tested – and with recompense for losses for those women who have already reached their SPA.

WASPI are urging all supporters to take action. Through a letter of complaint to the DWP, contact with your MP and spreading the word it is hoped that the Campaign will highlight the unfair treatment of the affected women.

There will be a huge WASPI presence throughout the UK on the 14th July. MPs and representatives from unions will be joining WASPI women, their family and friends to send a message, loud and clear, to the Government that will are not going away until justice is done.

Rallies will be taking place in the Midlands – Birmingham; North West – Manchester; North East – Durham; Scotland – Falkirk; South East – Ramsgate; Southern Counties – Southampton.
